In a well-made shop, the wall behind the counter does more work than any sign. It is the surface every customer photographs, the backdrop to every product, the thing the eye lands on before a single price is read. A retail brand wall is that surface built as architecture rather than decoration: a permanent feature wall that carries the brand in its form and colour, not in vinyl graphics stuck on afterwards. Commercial 3D wall panels are how you build one. Done in premium gypsum, the wall is A1 non-combustible under EN 13501-1 and painted on-site to your exact brand colour. The joints vanish into one continuous relief, so it reads as a single sculpted surface rather than a tiled grid.

What a retail brand wall actually is

A brand wall is the one surface in a store that is allowed to be about the brand rather than the merchandise. It sits behind the till, frames the entrance, or anchors the fitting-room corridor, and it stays put while the season's stock rotates in front of it. The distinction that matters for a buildout team is permanence. Applied graphics and display fixtures are changed out every campaign; a sculptural wall is signed off once and read as part of the building.

That permanence is what reads as premium, in person and on camera. When a retail interior is built to express brand identity through the architecture, the space stops looking merchandised and starts looking designed, the quality that design press consistently attributes to the strongest flagships (see the retail interiors documented by Interior Design Magazine and Dezeen's coverage of the gallery-like Frame store in Marylebone). A 3D relief does this with light: daylight and shop lighting rake across the surface and reveal its depth, so the wall changes through the day instead of sitting flat.

Why premium retail specifies 3D gypsum

Search the market for a commercial wall panel and you meet two kinds of supplier. One sells fire-rated cladding as a compliance commodity: metal, composite, laminate-faced board, chosen from a fixed range and specified to pass an inspection. The other is the design press, full of beautiful retail interiors with no material named at all. A specifier is left to bridge the two. Premium gypsum sits in that gap, because it answers the design brief and the compliance brief in the same product.

The material case is straightforward. Kandes, a Swiss brand for premium 3D wall panels, produces architectural panels in natural gypsum with fibreglass reinforcement, with no toxic or hazardous binders in the finished panel. Gypsum is a mineral material that gives the surface its A1 reaction-to-fire behaviour, and it takes paint cleanly, which is what makes the colour freedom below possible. These are architectural wall panels, not tiles and not applied decoration, and they are specified as such.

Paint it to the brand

The finish is where most retail specifications are decided. Kandes panels are painted on-site, after installation, in any colour. The joints between panels are filled and sanded first, so the finished wall is one continuous relief with no grid lines, and then the whole surface is painted as a single plane. That means the brand wall is finished to your exact brand colour, matched to a paint reference rather than chosen from a supplier's fixed palette.

For a retail brand, that is the difference between a wall that approximates the identity and a wall that is the identity. A deep house green, a specific off-white, a saturated signature tone: all are on the table because the colour is a paint decision made at the end, not a product decision made at order time. The finish is also serviceable. For a normal interior refresh cycle the surface can be repainted in the first four years, so a brand can re-colour the same wall for a rebrand or a seasonal concept without stripping anything out. Colour freedom is one of the things Kandes buyers value most, and it is worth reading alongside what actually makes a 3D wall panel premium.

Specifying for a public space: fire, wear, light

A retail unit is a public space, so the brand wall has to clear the same bar as the rest of the fit-out. Three points carry the sign-off.

Fire. Kandes panels are A1 non-combustible under EN 13501-1, the highest classification in the European reaction-to-fire system: the panel contributes no fuel load and produces no flaming droplets. The classification rests on the non-combustibility test at the base of the system, EN ISO 1182, and gypsum's behaviour under that test is well documented by the European gypsum industry; for a plain-language map of the Euroclasses from A1 to F, Promat's reference is useful. In Switzerland the same performance is read through the VKF (Vereinigung Kantonaler Feuerversicherungen) fire-protection framework and specified alongside the relevant SIA norms, so a Swiss retail project can cite the A1 result its authority expects. This is the same ground covered in more depth in our note on A1 non-combustible wall panels and EN 13501-1.

Wear. Retail is high-touch. Gypsum panels are designed to retain their structure and appearance over time and are highly durable when installed and maintained correctly, and because the surface is painted, a scuff from a delivery trolley is an on-site touch-up rather than a replaced panel. There is no special cleaning regime.

Light. Where a display wall needs integrated light, several Kandes families offer it, and the method is specified per model rather than assumed: some panels carry the LED built into the panel, others take light through a separate accessory profile fitted alongside the gypsum. Standard colour temperature is 6000K, with 3000K, 4000K and RGB available as custom options on request. Because the detail differs by family, a lighting specification is drawn against the specific panel; the full picture is in our guide to LED-integrated 3D wall panels.

From flagship to boutique to showroom

The same brand wall logic scales across formats. In a flagship it is the hero surface behind the counter; in a boutique it is the single feature wall that gives a small footprint its identity; in a car, furniture or watch showroom it is the backdrop that makes the product read as considered. The relief can be pattern-led through the Geometric collection for modular, repeating motifs, or flowing through the Soft Forms collection where a continuous seamless relief runs across a large wall.

For a brand rolling out across several locations, consistency is the real requirement, and it is where being the producer matters. Kandes panels are produced in Europe and Kandes holds stock of every catalogue model, so a specified panel can be repeated across a store estate on a workable lead time rather than re-sourced site by site. The panels are sold directly through kandes.ch and through a curated distributor network, and a project can be planned end to end through a project consultation. Installation is a professional job for a gypsum finishing contractor, briefed with the installation and maintenance guide; on a Swiss premium retail street such as Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse or Geneva's Rue du Rhône, that finish quality is the point of the exercise.

FAQ

Are 3D wall panels suitable for commercial and retail spaces?

Yes. Kandes commercial 3D wall panels are made for retail, hospitality and commercial interiors as well as residential ones. They are specified as a permanent feature wall, are A1 non-combustible under EN 13501-1 for public spaces, and are durable under high-traffic use when installed and maintained correctly.

Are 3D wall panels fire-rated for public retail spaces?

Kandes panels hold A1 non-combustible classification under EN 13501-1, the highest reaction-to-fire class in the European system. The panel contributes no fuel load and no flaming droplets. In Switzerland the result is read through the VKF framework and specified alongside the relevant SIA norms, which is what a retail authority will look for.

Can a feature wall panel be painted to a brand colour?

Yes, and this is the point of the system. Kandes panels are painted on-site after installation, in any colour, so the wall is finished to your exact brand reference rather than a fixed catalogue shade. The joints are filled and sanded first, so the painted surface reads as one continuous relief.

How durable are 3D wall panels in high-traffic retail?

They are designed to retain their structure and appearance over time and are highly durable when installed and maintained correctly. Because the finish is paint, handling marks are corrected with an on-site touch-up, and the wall can be repainted in the first four years for a normal refresh cycle without replacing any panels.
